Money Hero Capstone

“Can you run a real little money system — and explain your choices?”

By the end of the month, pupils can plan a small project with a starting budget, earn by making something useful, fund needs before nice-to-haves, keep a buffer for surprises, give generously while staying in budget, and present a balanced plan with one adaptation and a safety check.

Plan the corner

Goal: Build a €20 starting plan and explain priorities.

Scenario

A project has €20. The bench repair costs €8, a waterproof cover €8 and a just-in-case buffer gets €4. A shiny sign would be nice but is not needed for safety. Defend a first plan.

45-minute flow

5m show the broken bench and beautiful sign; 8m model repair/cover as project priorities; 20m groups allocate €20 and sketch a usable corner; 8m compare the plans, including what is postponed; 4m exit: one decision and reason.

Earn by helping

Penny · 45 min

Goal: Show that the corner earned money by making something people wanted and were happy to pay for, not by taking it from anyone.

Scenario

The team makes eight bookmarks; supplies cost €4 and each sells for €2. Find the sales and the bookmark profit, and say why the corner "earned" this money by helping people.

45-minute flow

5m ask what makes someone willingly hand over €2; 8m model the eight bookmarks selling at €2 each and the €4 spent on supplies; 20m pairs total the sales, take away supplies to find profit, and list why buyers valued a handmade bookmark; 8m discuss that earning means giving something useful in return, so nobody was left worse off; 4m exit: name one thing the bookmark gave the buyer.

What are the total sales from 8 bookmarks at €2 each?
After €4 of supplies, what is the bookmark profit?
Why did the corner "earn" this money rather than just receive it?
Name one other helpful way the team could earn for the corner.

Needs before nice

Goal: Sort a spending choice into a need and a want, and show why the need is funded before the nice-to-have.

Scenario

The €8 waterproof cover protects the corner; a shiny €6 sign only looks nice. With safety first, decide which comes first and how a sign could still arrive later.

5m ask what happens to books in the rain with no cover; 8m model the cover as a need that protects the corner and the sign as a want that only looks lovely; 20m pairs decide the order to buy them from €20 and justify it, then face an "only €6 left" twist; 8m discuss that a want can wait but an unmet need keeps costing you; 4m exit: name one need and one want in the classroom.

Which is a need and which is a want: the €8 cover or the €6 sign?
Why should the cover come first?
If only €6 were left, would you buy the €8 cover or the €6 sign — and what would you do?
Name one fair way the team could still get a sign later.

The buffer that saved the day

Goal: Show that a small amount saved on purpose lets a plan survive a surprise without breaking.

Scenario

A €4 just-in-case buffer meets a surprise €2 crack repair. Find what is left, and explain what could have gone wrong with no buffer at all.

45-minute flow

5m ask what happens when a plan spends its very last coin and then something breaks; 8m model the €4 buffer that was kept back on purpose; 20m pairs draw the surprise €2 repair card, take it from the €4 buffer, and record what is left; 8m discuss why the corner stayed open when a no-buffer plan would have stalled; 4m exit: name one surprise a buffer could cover.

How much is the just-in-case buffer?
A surprise crack needs a €2 fix — what is the balance after paying it from the buffer?
What could have happened if there had been no buffer?
Why should every plan keep a small buffer?

Final mission

Present the decision

Goal: Communicate a balanced plan, one adaptation and a safety check.

Scenario

In one minute, explain what the reading corner needed, where the starting €20 went, how the plan changed, and what remained. Finish with a safe response to a fictional “donate now” message and one improvement for next time.

5m explain the audience: a fictional community-centre team; 8m model a 60-second presentation; 20m groups prepare and present a plan with the €20 start, bookmark decision, ending balance and one digital-safety check; 8m peers give “clear calculation / clear reason / one question” feedback; 4m self-assessment.

For the teacher

Prepare once

Print the project-plan and presentation pages. Prepare a fictional €20 starting budget per team and simple 'make and sell' item cards (bookmarks, cards, badges). Use a board for the plan → adapt → present arc. Nothing real is made, sold or collected.

Adapt for your class

For 6–8, run the project with whole-euro amounts and a drawn plan, and present in one sentence each. For 9–12, record sales, costs and an ending balance accurately, handle one surprise with the buffer, and present a reasoned plan. Give every team a role card so everyone contributes.

Assess the mission

In the final presentation, mark across the year's strands: a balanced plan (income, needs before wants, a buffer); one honest adaptation to a surprise; and a safety/kindness check. This capstone shows the whole year — look for reasoning that connects earning, budgeting, saving, giving and staying safe.
