“How do small habits turn a wish into something real?”

By the end of the month, pupils can turn a wish into a goal with an amount and a date, set aside savings before spending, build the habit through small regular amounts, keep a just-in-case buffer separate from a goal, and plan how to reach a goal sooner.

Save first, then spend

Goal: Set aside the saving amount before spending the rest, and see why "save first" works better than "save what's left".

Income €6. In "save first" you set aside €2, then spend the rest. In "spend first" you spend €5 on a treat, then save what is left. Compare how much each method saves.

Put aside €2 in weeks 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6. Week 4 is skipped. Draw the balance after every week; then compare it with six uninterrupted weeks.

For the teacher

Prepare once

Print the goal + savings-tracker page and a few fictional goal cards with amounts and weekly savings. Have two labelled envelopes or jars per pair ('goal' and 'just in case'). Whole-euro amounts; no real savings or bank details.

Adapt for your class

For 6–8, use a small whole-euro goal (e.g. €6 at €2 a week) and colour a tracker. For 9–12, split a weekly amount across two goals and compare finish dates, then add a one-off boost. Offer a ready-made tracker grid and sentence starters for the goal statement.

Assess the mission

In the mission (plan to reach a goal sooner), mark: a clear goal (amount + contribution + date); a realistic way to get there faster (save more, add a one-off, or trim a cost); and an honest finish-date check. Patience and a plan beat a lucky guess.
