How to turn a wish into a money goal
One large amount becomes a series of small, achievable steps — with a plan, a weekly amount and a tracker.
Save to PinterestThe biggest goals feel impossible at first. €349 for a Nintendo Switch when you have €30? That can feel like a mountain. But every big number is really just a pile of small ones — and a plan turns the mountain into steps you can actually climb.
Here is how to turn any wish into a money goal you can reach.
1. Choose one goal that matters to you
Pick a single thing you really want. One goal at a time is easier to reach than five at once.
2. Find out the real price
Look up what it actually costs today — not a guess. That real number is your target.
3. Record how much you already have
Count what you have saved so far. This is your starting amount, and it means you are already on your way.
4. Work out how much is still needed
Subtract what you have from the price. That is the gap your plan will close.
5. Choose a realistic weekly amount
How much can you add each week without giving up everything else? Even €1 a week is a real step. Small and steady beats big and impossible.
6. Work out roughly how many weeks
Divide what you still need by your weekly amount. That is about how many weeks your mission will take. The Goal Planner does this maths for you and even shows an estimated goal date.
7. Track every contribution
Cross off each week as you save. Watching the boxes fill up is what keeps a long goal going.
8. Decide what to do with birthday money and other surprises
Extra money — a birthday, an odd job, selling an old toy — can move your goal much closer. You choose: put all of it toward the goal, or just part of it.
9. Adjust the plan when things change
Missed a week? Prices changed? That's normal. Change the weekly amount or the goal and keep going. A plan is allowed to change.
10. Celebrate progress, not just the finish
Every 25% is worth a small celebration. Reaching the goal is great — but so is the habit you built to get there.
A worked example
- Goal: Nintendo Switch — €349
- Already saved: €30
- Weekly saving: €4
- Still needed: €319
- Estimated time: about 80 weeks
Then a €25 birthday boost arrives and the finish line jumps several weeks closer. That is the power of a plan plus a little extra.
Saving plans are allowed to change. Missing one week does not mean the mission has failed — it just means the next week matters a little more.
For parents
- Help your child choose a realistic weekly amount — one they can keep up.
- Never shame a missed week. The goal is the habit, not perfection.
- Let your child make age-appropriate choices about their own money.
- Talk together about whether gift money should be saved, spent or divided.
- Celebrate the milestones — 25%, 50%, 75% — not only the finish.
