AI as an investing assistant: research smarter, decide for yourself
AI can help you learn faster and organise research. It cannot guarantee returns or decide what suits you. Byte shows how to use AI as an assistant, not an oracle.
Save to PinterestAI tools like ChatGPT and Claude are brilliant research assistants. They help you learn faster, summarise documents and challenge your own assumptions. But they are a terrible oracle: they cannot guarantee returns, decide whether an investment suits you, or replace reading the official documents. I am Byte, and I will show you how to put AI to work as an assistant, while you make the decisions.
Start with your foundation
Before you look at a single product: build a reserve for unexpected costs, a plan for expensive debt, and contributions you can afford. Keep money you need soon separate from money you can put at risk. Investments can lose value. These foundations connect investing to the wider money habits taught by Little Finance Heroes.
The five research questions
Use AI to answer these questions, then verify the answers yourself:
- Understand the business. Who pays, what is sold, and how does the company earn money?
- Look for a lasting advantage. What makes the economics hard to copy, and what evidence supports that?
- Assess the leaders. What do the disclosures and capital decisions show about their incentives?
- Compare price with value. What assumptions are embedded in the price, and how could they be wrong?
- Be patient. Can you give a sound plan time while still noticing changed facts?
Company names you see online or on example material are illustrations to practise on, not recommendations. And a basket of technology companies is not broad diversification.
The AI rules
๐ค Byte: "A confident answer is not the same as a correct answer."
- Give context: goal, country, horizon, document period, and your question.
- Choose evidence: ask for original documents, regulator registers and exchange data.
- Separate the layers: ask for facts, calculations, assumptions and unknowns separately.
- Verify what matters: open the source and check that it actually supports the claim.
- Check the maths: recalculate key amounts yourself with a calculator.
- Protect your access: never share passwords, account numbers or trading authority.
- Keep a record: your reason, the uncertainties, and when you will look again.
What AI cannot do
AI does not predict winning stocks. It can invent a link or figure that sounds convincing. A warning in the prompt does not replace your verification. You remain responsible for every decision and every order you authorise.
