How much can I safely spend today? Meet the Money Compass
Your bank balance isn't the same as money you can freely spend. The Money Compass in our free Cashflow Tracker works it out for you — and helps you weigh a purchase before you buy.
Save to PinterestYou open your banking app and see €2,846. Feels good, right? But that number is a trap. Part of it is already promised to rent, insurance, your savings goal and a buffer for when something breaks. The real question isn't "what's in my account?" but "how much can I safely spend today without putting any of those at risk?"
That's exactly what the Money Compass in our free Cashflow Tracker does.
From bank balance to "safe to spend"
The Money Compass does one simple, honest sum:
Income − already spent − still to save − bills still coming − safety buffer = flexible money
Then it spreads that flexible money over the days left in the month. The result is one clear number:
🟢 €43 a day — that's what you can spend per day for the rest of the month and still pay every bill, save your planned €300, and stay inside your budget.
Why there's also a "smart target" below it
You don't see one number, but two:
- €43 safe to spend
- ⭐ €35 smart target
Why lower? Research shows that people who know exactly how much budget is left often spend right up to that limit. A slightly lower target deliberately keeps a little in reserve — a small cushion that grows on its own when you finish under target. Not a stern "RED = BAD", just calm room to breathe.
"Can I afford this?" — before you buy
This is the difference between a diary and a compass. Type in an amount — say €70 tonight — and you instantly see the consequences:
- Your safe amount per day: €43 → €39
- Bills: covered ✓
- Savings goal: untouched ✓
- Weekend budget: a little smaller
And Goldie gives one calm verdict: "You can afford it — the trade-off is a slightly smaller cushion this month." No guilt, just insight.
And what does it cost Future You?
You can also look at every purchase through the other lens. That €70 is €70 today. But €70 saved every week and invested for 10 years at ~7% grows into thousands.
Important: both choices are valid. Enjoy it today, or give Future You the chance to grow it. The Money Compass doesn't choose for you — it lets you see the choice.
