Needs vs Wants: teach your child the difference (+ free worksheet)
Cash the Builder makes it simple โ with a sorting game and a printable worksheet.
Save to PinterestThe question comes sooner or later: "Can I have it? I need it!" Telling a need from a want is one of the first โ and most important โ money lessons a child can learn. Cash the Builder makes it simple, and below you'll find a free sorting game and a printable worksheet you can take with you.
What's the difference?
- A need is something you must have to live, stay healthy and go to school: food, clean water, a home, warm clothes, medicine.
- A want is nice to have, but you'd be fine without it: candy, a video game, the newest toy, ice cream.
- Sometimes the honest answer is "it depends". A bike is a need if you ride it to school and a want if it's just for fun. Those are the questions that spark the best conversations.
Why it matters
Kids who learn the difference make better money choices later. They learn to cover their needs first, then choose โ on purpose โ where their "wants money" goes. It's the foundation under budgeting, saving, and not having to own everything just because an ad says so.
How to use the free worksheet
- Open the Needs vs Wants Workshop and click "Make a worksheet".
- Print it โ a fresh, random set every time โ or choose "Save as PDF" to keep it.
- Have your child write N (Need) or W (Want) next to each picture.
- Check together with the answer key โ and talk about the "it depends" cards especially.
- Make it real: walk through an ordinary shopping list together and spot the needs and the wants.
A tip for parents
Don't judge the wants โ wants are allowed! The goal isn't "never anything fun," it's: needs first, then choose on purpose. That's exactly what Cash teaches kids.
Prefer a quick on-screen round? Play the drag-and-drop sorting game โ drag each card to Need or Want, and Cash explains why for every card.
