Goldie · The 'pay later' trap
Goldie's warning
Buy Now, Pay Later — Explained
Klarna, Riverty, in3, Afterpay. Pay later. Pay in 3 parts. Pay interest-free. Sometimes it's fine. Often it's a slow-motion trap. Let's play it out.

“BNPL doesn't make things cheaper. It makes them feel cheaper, which is different. Same coat, same euros, just spread over months — until you miss a payment.” — Goldie

Where you stand
You bought it. €0 paid today. Three more payments to come.

Late fee
€0.00
Total cost
€120.00
Why BNPL hits teens hardest
1. The price feels smaller. €120 → ‘3 × €40’ sounds easier even though it's the same money.
2. No instant pain. You walk out with the thing. No empty wallet. The euros come later, split, fading into the month.
3. Easy to stack.One BNPL = manageable. Three BNPLs running at once = €40 + €25 + €30 = €95/month you didn't plan for.
4. Credit damage compounds. Missed payments hit your credit score for years. In NL, BKR registrations from BNPL can affect renting an apartment or getting a phone contract.

When BNPL is actually OK
- ✅ You have the FULL amount in your account right now
- ✅ It's only used because the merchant pays the fee (rare)
- ✅ You've set automatic payments and have a guaranteed income for the full term
- ❌ You're using it BECAUSE you don't have the money — that's the trap
- ❌ You're stacking 2+ BNPLs at once
- ❌ You're using it for things that lose value fast (clothes, electronics)
